Chris Votek is a cellist, producer, arranger, and educator living and breathing music in Los Angeles. Born the son of a wine grape grower in Sonoma County, Votek’s first musical endeavor was playing rock music on electric bass, but ceaseless curiosity and devotion to musical traditions from around the world have guided him along a musical path perpetually branching out.
Chris plays regularly with composer/songwriter Julia Holter, Arabic Orchestra MESTO, chamber jazz group The Brad Dutz Quartet, and various Western Classical Orchestras and Chamber Ensembles. He has also performed with Fun, Amanda Palmer, The Dirty Projectors, Father John Misty, and toured extensively at top venues throughout Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and the United States. A devoted student of master Gayaki-Ang violinists Dr N. Rajam and Jagannathan Ramamoorthy, Votek’s subtle and nuanced sound is greatly informed by his continual study adapting this ancient music to the cello. From the avant garde sounds of Arthur Russell to the classic and lush tones of Yo – Yo Ma, Chris has a versatile palette that can be applied to any event.
